I dont think it will be as exciting. Any american births I watched on youtube/16 and pregnant (yes I am obsessed), seem very controlled eg induced at 38-40 wks, epidural given early and all very calm.

I like screaming and hormonal bitching as part of the entertainment. Dont think it will be the same!

I've noticed that on the american programmes. They all seem to have epidurals as soon as they start contracting and loads seem to end up have c-sections

The UK way obviously works as it has a lower c-sec rate (im assuming), but I have to say I quite like the idea of being induced by due date, getting an epidural when I decide (and not when a MW gives me permission to ask a dr), and generally having what looks like quite a pain free birth. Im not one for wanting to feel every push/cherish the experience *shudders*

Have you also noticed how they get wheeled to car in wheelchair to go home- 2 days after giving birth?! Hello\- at my hospital you were expected to be walking 6 hrs after birth and the next day you certainly were walking down corridor to canteen for meals/the bathroom/midwife station as buzzers were only for emergency.

Id love to see an NHS MW's face with we asked to be wheeled to car Laughing

hahahaha me and hubby said the same last night Laughing

yeah i will have a look, nice to see a different culture i suppose, but from when i used to watch home and health allllll the time (umm whole pregnancy) there did seem to be a lot of epidurals and sections going on before things really started?!

They make them walk for their c-section though. I got wheeled down to mine.
I had the opposite. I got told to have an epidural to stop the pressure as it was making me want to push. One mw basically pushed pethidine on me as well.

Mari as soon as I got my bfp I started watching all the baby programmes on home and health.

Will be watching it as its hubby's snooker night

Lol Snoops I was one of them weirdos who didn't want any intervention or pain relief. I am a complete control freak and hate the feeling of drugs etc - anything unatural in my system. I ended up having a small ammount of codein with Hannah and hated it - totally freaked me out so refused any more when it wore off - I genuinely would rather the pain. I was induced with Hannah and all was fine till they put me on the drip and I completely freaked out as I wasn't in control and it all went a bit wrong ****For all you OBEM fans**** 548646.

Also I was wheeled out in a wheelchair holding Hannah two days after I had her Laughing infact I was wheeled everywhere I wanted to go and they actually tried to encourage me to stay in longer to get some rest - I loved the hospital I had Hannah at ****For all you OBEM fans**** 270211 could've stayed there a month - it was like being on my hols (once the pain bit was over Neutral).

Just shows everyone is dif debs! I was gutted I didnt get to try pethidine Laughing I went from gas & air (which didnt make me as high as I wanted to be) to the epidural due to my BP. I still moan now that I didnt get to be out of it during her birth.

As for the wheeling about - im seriously shocked your hospital was so nice. Mine was far to busy to be doing that.

I dont know how many nights Id want to stay in hopsital with this one. I can actually see how id get more rest in hospital that at home. At least visitors are restricted in hopsital, think id miss Caitlin but.

See at the end there you put - once the pain bit was over. Id take feeling out of control anyday over pain! Im quite happy for others to take control if it means I dont have pain!

I wouldn't be so keen to try pethidine. All it did was take away the build up of the pain so you're left with the intense pain and you have no warning.

I hate drugs and didn't really want any but ended up with the lot

I'm a bit like Debs, I tried G&A but hated it, had one puff when I arrived at the hosp and spewed Embarassed ...so went without anything..and i'm glad I did, I actually loved every minute of it Laughing
The thought of an epidural scares me more than any labour Shocked No, not me, never Uh Uh!

As for walking about...I had a quite a traumatic tear and was stitched, unstitched and stitched again..but was up walking about, having a shower as soon as she's done. Although I did get wheeled upto the ward later that night. Smile

uggggggh epidural yuck no ta! haha i really didn't want one and wouldn't get one again (of course, should i have the choice, you never know). g+a was good for me and didn't get that til 8cm, im with debs, i hate being out of control and want to know what's going on at all times! but with an insanely fast labour, an overactive pessary and a back to back labour i couldn't manage without Smile

Liberty I was induced and on drip so I had constant intense pain with no build ups so wonder what effect pethidine would have had on that?

I had epi due to BP but with constant contractions on drip & back to back, like Mari, I couldnt have done without it. The pain and pressure made me feel more out of control than the epidural - once that was in I calmed down.

My MIL really against epidurals too. Think that makes me more for them Wink

I was like both of you. I was induced and had a back to back labour (although he was the right way round for about 15 hours) and had been in labour for 30 hours by the time they took me into theatre. I just don't like drugs as they make me ill and wouldn't have asked for an epidural because I didn't like the idea of a needle in my back. Didn't exactly put up a fight when they suggested it though. Pethidine might have worked better for you. Drugs don't tend to work for me anyway. Morphine is the only thing that I seem to be able to take without feeling really sick

dont you have to stay in for ages if you have an epidural? that's the main reason im glad i didnt, we were out in under 24 hours (although, in hindsight should have stayed longer!)

obviously had i ended up with a section i would have preferred one to just g+a hahaha but 2.5 hours isn't really long enough to need anything 'proper' Laughing

Not sure how long you have to stay in Mari. I had epidural at 11am, she was born before 3pm. Was in bed on ward with a catheter for visiting at 6pm (was fun warning people not to sit on my bag of pee Laughing ). I could wriggle my feet with epidural. It didnt make me totally numb and even the evening I had her I could move myself about the bed/get up to lift her etc.

The next day they removed catheter before breakfast, I had shower by myself and walked down for meals etc. Id def get one again, though yes the idea of needle in my back does freak me out a bit - but in the heat of labour I hardly noticed.

I ended up staying 2nights but def could have gone home after 1 had I decided. I asked to discharge myself, dont know how long they would have let me stay. I left hospital just under 48 hrs after she was born. Tbh I think the episiotomy and my BP would have been bigger factors in me staying than the fact id had epidural.

Erm sorry to burst your bubble Mari but you wouldnt have time. It was a bit of a quick decision to get her out asap. (She was 8lb 1oz with a head that was 98th centile lol)

Just to make you Puke2 a bit more..... I swear as they started to do it the MW/Dr said 'these scissors are a bit blunt'. Even Stuart said he felt like screaming at them to get a sharp pair Laughing Its not that bad, they do it when you pushing so you dont notice too much (my epidural only worked on one side so I could still feel parts). She flew out 2 seconds later in one big gush so id def get one again if needed to.

Stitches weren't fun but I just lay sucking up the g&a talking rubbish while Stuart had his first cuddles. Very Happy

I think it can seem worse if you havent experienced it, especially if you've listened to horror stories. To me a graze sounds sorer/more stingy. At least with stitches its all neatly tidied up for quick healing. Id no problems with my stitches (hello I had sex 20 days after birth Shocked ).

The only problem was going to the toilet. That was a scary experience for a week or 2. I didnt poop for 6 days and it was only when MW threatened to squirt something up my bum did I take myself off to the toilet and 'perform' Laughing

They seem to do things very similar in the USA to Cyprus then (in faact I think most other countries do it differently to the UK)

I don't know whether it's because in USA they have private insurance and so can spend more money? or what - but here, they would rather book you in to be induced or have a C section than let you go naturally. They don't let you go overdue because they don't think it's healthy - they scan you every week after 36 weeks here and can see the placenta breaking down so can see why they don't like you going overdue.
I also think it's mainly do with the fact that if something did go wrong, that one DR (as its the DR responsibilty to deliver the baby - no MWs) his reputation would be ruined so they do all they can to make sure the baby is here as quickly and safely as possible.

At first I hated the thought of it but after seeing some of the near disasters on OBEM made me glad they are so sonctrolling about labour here!

I hope they don't overdramatise this though like they do with most american things ugh.
