PostSubject: Birth weights - parents vs sibblings   Birth weights - parents vs sibblings EmptySat Aug 13, 2011 9:21 pm

Im sure this has been asked before but hey!

Do you think LO's birth weight is anything to do with parents birth weights? Or do you think sibblings weights are similar? Or is it more to do with diet in pg/totally random for each pg?

Just asking because when pg with Caitlin MIL had me convinced she was going to be huge. I think Stuart was almost 10lb and his sister almost 11lb. I on the other hand was 7lb 11oz, so pretty average. In the end Caitlin was 8lb 1oz, so quite close to my birth weight & generally ave imo. Stuart is 6ft 4 and im 5ft 8 so we both quite big, I also ate pretty much what I wanted when pg & wasnt watching my weight.

Im just wondering whether this LO could still be 10-11lb like Stuart, or be nearer to 8lb like Caitlin was. Ideally id like to request a baby between 6.5-8.5lb Laughing

Whats the birth weights for people in your family?

I was 8lb 4 I think, my sisters were both bigger than me,

I actually don't know what my OH was because his mum "can't remember" Rolling Eyes

Tyler was 7lb 12 so pretty close to me i guess... I didn't exactly watch what I was eating during pregnancy but along with all the scans you get they monitor your weight which I suppose helps you not put too much on...

I'll tell you in november as this baby should be smaller than Tyler if what you eat effects the size as Im not eating half the amount i was with Tyler!

Its tricky with Izzy as she was early, but I think at full term she'd have not been far off what I was

I dunno though - I think the size of baby mostly depends on the size of the mother - Dan is 6'3" and Im only 5'5"...and I had a baby suitable for my size...rather than big like you'd expect from a big father?

i was 6 lb 14 oz martin was 5lb 3 weeks early
i am 5 ft 7 in and martin is 6ft

dylan was 8 lb 2.5oz
tyler was 8lb 8 oz
finlay was 8lb 14 oz

so mine have all got bigger each time so if i have another i recon it would be over 9 lb its strange cos we were both quite small babies, but all my cousins were 8 lb and over my auntie said to me that we dont have small babies so that must be where the bigger weights come from lol x

Well I was 6lb at 3 weeks early and I'm 5 ft 8
OH was 7lb 3oz at 2 weeks early he's 6 foot

Rowan was 1 day early at weighed 8lb 7oz I lost 2 stone in weight whilst pg with Rowan as I changed my diet to healthy

Hermione was 4 days late was 9lb 12 & 1/2oz I ate a lot less in this pregnancy as had constant morning sickness I lost 2 stone again

So I don't think it has anything to do with my diet or our heights

Sad I'll do this in 2 sections...

Darren was 7lb 3oz and 5ft 8in due date baby
I was 8lb 7oz and 5ft 6in 5 days late

Lewis was 8lb 1/2oz 3 days late
Owen was 9lb 12oz 9 days late

James was "about 7lb" and a week early according to his mum Rolling Eyes .... and is 6ft 2in

Hayden was 8lb 12oz and 9 days late

I think it means nothing.... I remember being told if you add parents weights and divide in half its roughly but think the crapp tbh Smile

So far it does seem that babies are closer to mums birth weight than dads, taking into account due dates. I agree with Lisa's theory about babies being the right size for mums rather than how big the dad is - thank god!!! Laughing Obviously there are still big babies born to smaller mums - just hope I dont have to experience a 10lb baby pale Epidurals all the way haha!

I was 9lb 8.5oz at 10days late. I'm 5ft 3
Matt was 3wks early and only 5lbs. He's 5ft 10 ish so neither of us are particularly small.

Imogen was 9lb 12oz at 1wk late so fairly close to my birth weight.

I don't think her weight had any thing to do with her being late as she always measured big. I'm hoping for a smaller baby thing time round, although Immi's birth wasn't awful or anything, her head just kept coming right down then up again. This one is currently measuring a week behind so might be smaller.

As for diet, I couldn't eat a lot when pregnant with Immi as I had bad morning sickness to begin with then later if I ate more than a little portion I threw up. This pregnancy i've eaten as and when I want and quite a bit of junk. we'll see when this one is born whether it has made any difference.

I was 8lb2 and a week late. Oh was 9lb6. Jamie was 8lb7 at 38.3 so probably would have been over 9lb full term. Tbh all babies in our family are much the same. My sister was 9lb6 and her two were 9lb10 and 9lb14. My other sister was 8lb8. Oh has two brothers and they were much the same weight as him so does seem to be genetic.

In terms of eating my sister said she ate junk with her first. With her second she ate really healthily as she was worried it had made Jake big and because she had to get into a bridesmaid dress for my wedding 3 months later and Katie was the slightly bigger of the two and both were two weeks late

I was 5 days late and 7-2. C was 2 weeks early and 5-12.5 and awen was 2+1 early and 6-5. Im 5-3. No idea what neil was. My girls were a bit hard to judge though as neither of them would have gotten that much bigger because of the pre ec especially C.

i was an average i think...my mother never bothered to tell me...but one of my siblings was super small and another got stuck on his way out cos he was so big Laughing so i don't think it's anything to do with mothers birth weights

lily-ann was 6lb 7oz and lewis 7lb 3.5oz so a decent size

i was a day late and weighed 7,7...
OH was 4 days late and weighed 6,12 (something up with his mum's placenta?)
and benji was 9lbs 2oz and 16 days late Shocked Rolling Eyes

i'm 5ft 10 and OH's 6ft 3

benji is already in 18-24 months pants because of how long he is Laughing

i do think weight goes by your parents, but i do believe how much you eat and do in your pg has a lot to do with it...benji was born very long and thin with a big head (like me and his da Razz) and is still massively long now Very Happy

Alfie was 7lb 15oz and was 9 days early. I was born a week early and was 6lb 12oz - gav was a few days early and was 8lb 2oz.

I ate watever i wanted whn i was pregnant with him and most of it was junk (tut tut bad me!). I think if he'd been born on his due date he would have been almost 9lb which i think is pretty heavy!

Im hoping for one the samw next time- saying that tho it was still the worst pain ever so i guess it doesnt really matter!! x

Amelia was 2lb 8oz and the length of a 34 week baby at 27 weeks Shocked tall and thin like her dad lol She was 6lb 10oz by her due date and is now 9lb at 3 weeks corrected so I think she would have been massive if she was term because she didnt actually put any weight on for 5 weeks Laughing

I was 7lb 11oz and oh was 7lb something.

My nan, mother and sister were all 6lb 4 1/2oz
