| We really need a new kitchen, the people before us fitted the one we have and it's just a mess. I'm convinced the cupboards are going to fall off at any moment. Anyways we're going to start saving and get one in Jan. So question, generally how much does a new kitchen cost? We've had a look in Ikea and seems fairly good prices but is that the best place to go? Should I pay more somewhere else and will it be better quality? Matt thinks if his bro and my dad help him he should be able to fit it all. (his bro is a plumber and my dad used to be an electrician and all three of them are good at general diy) Is it worth paying a professional though? Matt says it will add a lot to the cost. Side note: I finally feel like a grown up, discussing new kitchens! |

| If you have a plumber and a former electrician, I wouldnt even think about getting in the professionals to do a kitchen.
We did our own (with a little help from parents, etc.) and its alright. You can also get complete kitchens from places like B&Q fairly reasonable, especially in the January sale.
We got our worktops from B&Q and if you take your measurements, they cut them to size, so you just have to take them home and fit them xx |

| Good to know Matt will probs be able to fit it himself with help, sometimes i just worry he's over optimistic about his ability to save money.
Will have to check out B&Q then. Thanks.x |

| My dad recently did his and got it all from Wicks. He's a dab hand at all the trades so saved himself some pennies there too I've had a look at ikea kitchens in the past, they are nice. |

It's the whole thing. Wish it was just the doors, but no the guy who did all the work in this house before us was a complete idiot and everything is a mess. He clearly had no clue what he was doing and cut corners wherever he could. |

| We got our kitchen from Focus last year, I'm sure it cost us around £1500 and that included carcases, doors, handles, kickboards, end panels, worktops etc.
Its well worth shopping around though, we got our taps from B&Q in the sale, the tiles from B&Q as they were cheaper, the sink I think we got from an ebay shop really cheap.
Luckily we had a friend who's a property developer come and fit it all, I dont think Simon could of done it himself, but if Matt is quite handy and has all of the tools I'm sure he could do it (but would definately need help with the wall units etc).

| Do you rent or own? If you rent you should ask your landlord - maybe they would fit a new one for you?
I think ours was about £1200 just for the units, but my dad gets trade discount so not sure what they normall cost tbh |

| We rent from housing association, but the people before us removed the kitchen the housing people had put in and put their own in. This makes the kitchen the tenants responsibility. As we did a house swap we had to accept the house in the condition it was in and take on the responsibilities they had (ie the kitchen). We didn't think much of it at the time as kitchen looked fairly decent. It was only when we moved in we realised it's falling apart. I guess at least we can do it how we like and when we like rather than waiting around for housing association to refit which they only do every 15yrs or something ridiculous. |
