hi girls

I dont have much time to come online but needed to know if anyone knows how much a baby must have of breast milk that is important. Aharon used to eat for 20 minutes and now only eats between 10 and 15, is he getting the nutrients that he needs? I tried googling it, but nothing came up. Breast feeding 548646

Hi hun, it is quite normal for them to reduced their feeding time as the become established with breast feeding. They are still getting all they need but they are able to get it more effectively. Oliver used to be a good half hour and in no time at all was done in 5-10 mins, but still getting all he needed. xxx

Thanks hun, I heard somewhere that they need a certain amount of time to make sure they get the good milk. Any idea how much time that is? You would think by my 3rd I should be an expert Very Happy

I'm not to sure about timing exactly, but there is a chance if they are only feeding for short periods that they may be getting to much fore milk and not enough hind milk (the fatty milk) so what I used to do was feed from boob 'A' until they are full enough, but on the next feed start on boob 'A' before moving onto boob 'B' just so they are getting all the fatty milk first before it replenishes again. xx

i was told by my hv that anywhere between 5-40 mins is normal for a newborn and as they get older the time will reduce like zee said as they can get the milk more effectivley. as long as your lo is still putting on weight then im sure he's doing fine xx

Elijah was the same, anything between 30 mins - 1 hour, he still feeds for maybe 10-15 minutes now but that's plenty for him (he's still putting on loads of weight and is healthy). So long as the weight is going up and they seem to be healthy/developing/alert then you are doing fine Very Happy
My health visitor said to me this week that if a baby is just feeding 5 minutes every hour, and seems to have very wet nappies (poo) then they aren't getting the 'hind' milk...but you would also see a lack of weight gain, I think all breastfed babies have wet poo but again, the weight is the key to wether they are getting enough or not Smile
