Because my brother has diabetes I have to have a GTT even though he only has it because he had a virus when he was younger which damaged his pancreas. I asked my consultant if it was really necessary and he was very blase about it and said I might as well have it. My problem is that it's booked for when I'm 28 weeks - 7 January at 9:05am, Simon works in the morning and can't take the time off, they want me to fast from 8pm the previous evening and I have to drive about 20 miles in crappy traffic to get to the hospital. It says on the letter that I'll be there for 2 and a half hours and they will take bloods from me (I'm absolutely fine with needles but it took them half an hour to get a vein the other day). Anway, what I would like to know is for those that have had it, why did you have to have it? would it be feasible to take Libby with me on my own? I am tempted to ask my consultant again if it really is necessary but I think I'll be wasting my time xx

I had one last time and am having one again this time cos my dad has diabetes. As it says you fast then when you get there you drink this sugary crap and after a couple of hours they test your blood. Thing is its not totaly feasible to take kids cos they dont like you haring around too much after the drink cos you burn the sugar off - when i had mine done i was on shift and asked if i could drink it and go back 2 hours later and work in between and they said no even though i was just on triage that day so they prob dont want you running around after libby. Im gonna have to get a sitter for C that day when i have mine so am hoping my sis is fit enough to have her by then cos its 8am on a monday so no bugger is ever free. Id ask consultant again as it doesnt sound like a big thing if your bros wasnt genetic. But like he says if you can get a sitter it doesnt hurt to check does it

I had it done as my BMI was on the boarder and wasnt till afterwards they realised they did it wrong! another hospital/ MW f up! anyways!!! I wouldnt have been able to take lillie, (mind I know each hospital have different rules) but after having the drink, I wasnt allowed to move for 2 hours. only to get up to the loo., trying not to burn as many cal as possiable. but I do know some who have had it have been able to leave the hospital for the 2 hours... so Im not sure. Id check and see, as if your allowed up and abbout then yeah I would have brought her. If your bro only had it through avirus im surprised they want you to have it. guess their just being safe. but no harm having it but if its going to be a pain I wouldnt have it done. x x

Thank you for replying Mario, yeah it's definately not genetic, no blood relatives that I know of have got it. Hope your sis can have C for you. Em, so thay got it wrong after all!! I didn't think it was right anyway, you definately dont look overweight. Hmmm, well my mum has offered to come with us so she can keep an eye on Libby for me. What I don't understand is I didn't have to have it with Libby and I told them about my brother then too I'm seeing my consultant again on 22nd October so I think I will ask him again, it just seems silly really. Thanks again. xx

Id def double check if you need it doing - I have to have it done when preg as my mum had gestational diabeties with one of my sisters. The 1st time I had it done at the drs and they sent the blood off to hosp for me (might be worth asking if they can do it that way for you) this time I had to go and was waiting for ages for them to take the 1st blood so delayed us all even more, hubby came with me as we had Hannah as my mum was away that week and everyone else was at work, plus I didnt fancy driving that far to our hosp inrush hour traffic when I was marvin starvin. Id ask if you really need it, and if you do cant the drs do it xxx

Thanks Steph Well I googled gestational diabetes to find out who were more at risk and Wikipedia came up with these bullett points: * Previous diagnosis of gestational diabetes - Nope * First degree relative having TYPE 2 diabetes - Nope Brother has type 1 * Maternal age being over 35 - Nope I'm 28 * Ethnic background - Nope * Being overweight/obese or severly obese - Nope my BMI is 25 so normal * Previous pregnancy resulting in birth weight of 8lb 12 or more - Nope Libby was 7lb 7 * Prevous poor obstetric history - Nope So it looks as though I'm not at risk AT ALL. x

Did your midwife ask you for family medical conditions at your booking in appointment? This is when I told them about my bro and the midwife automatically said I should have a GTT. If not it might be worth mentioning to your midwife (your seeing her this week aren't you?) just to check. xx |

Yeah ive got the MW in the morning, this is my booking in appointment, my doctors surgery are so rubbish that they wouldn't let me book in until at least 10 weeks and we were originally meant to be in Turkey last week so had it booked for tomorrow. I will definately mention it, I rung my dad to ask which type especially so I knew to mention it tomorrow. I will let you know what she says xx

Ah I see, yeah she'll fill in a load of paperwork and ask about medical conditions of close relatives. They also give you a folder with loads of literature and theres quite a few vouchers in there too xx
