Day 2 of taking C off her bottles. Shes nearly 18 months now and drinks out a cup all day so decided its time. Bought some avent spouts for her bottles and flung the teats in the bin to prevent caving in. Last night she was really mad about it but with lots of persuasion she drank 4 or 5 ounces in half an hour while watching tv. This morning she used a training spout which was rubber so drank a whole bottle. Tonight was a struggle though. She went mad about the bottle and spout and flatly refused to drink it. In the end i tipped the whole lot into her doc brown cup and she drank 2 ounces then refused any more. In the end i put a couple of spoons of nesquik into it and she drank another 3 ounces.

Dunno how to ease this transition though. I dont wanna keep giving her nesquik as its full of sugar even though i use the reduced sugar stuff and cant find a sugar free alternative. Im getting grief from my mum who says shes too little and from neil who is fussing she isnt drinking enough milk and shes tiny and difficult to get to gain weight anyway. Feel like ive got no support on this one at all. Feel like i need to do it now so shes settled and used to the idea for bubbas arrival. Im trying to spread out the big girl things like bottles, dummies and big girl bed over a few months.

I dont mind nesquik for a couple of days if it eases the transition but not keen on it being habit, thought perhaps could reduce the nesquik over a few nights maybe or even as she has warm milk put some options in it as it has waaaaaaay less sugar.

Any other ideas that might help as i dont want her refusing her milk if i can help it

i cant help at all mario cos we caved and gave Alice her bottles back after 4 days of her refusing point blank to drink any!

Hmmm sorry Mario, I have no idea as Libby has never taken a bottle (she's so blinking stubborn!!)

What I would say is that Libby did go from 13 months to 20 months without having milk of any sort as a drink, at 20 months we let her have a Nesquik and she loves the stuff. TBH I give her a cup every night after her dinner, I know it's full of sugar but it's so high in calories and she's so skinny and at least it does get milk in her. I just make sure she brushes her teeth thoroughly before bed.

Sorry hun can't help you really - Thomas will be two in two months and he still has his breakfast and bedtime bottles. I'm in no real rush to take it away tbh but good luck - hope someone can give you some advice.

we took evans morning bottle away when he was bout 13 months and the only thing i cud get him to drink milk out of was a cup i got from babies r us but its very similar to a bottle

at the moment he is refusing to drink out of it lol but to begin with it worked and i refuse to give him a bottle in the morning, he still gets bedtime bottle tho and has only recently started using it as his comfort much to my dislike! he has never choose anything for a comfort even tho ive tried to get him to take things and now when its soon time to come off bottle he chooses bottle lol he doesnt drink it at bedtime he jst holds it the whole night then drinks it thru the night!! then holds empty bottle grrr

gl with getting her off the bottles but it cud jst be that u need to try different cups til u find one she likes, i was told when taking evan off morning bottle to buy a cup different to the cup he drinks his juice from so that he knows its his milk cup

It might be alot of faffing around but wash, hull and halve a handful of strawberries or raspberries and her milk into the blender and whizz up and strain through a sieve for a really healthy and vitamin packed milkshake, with MJ I gave her a night time bottle right up until she was gone 2 years old, she had sippy cups during the day but always loved a bottle at night xxx

Well i caved in last night. Shes still poorly and last night i didnt have the heart to do it to her when she was snuggled in my chest trying to go to sleep the way she did as a baby. So i let her have her bottle and carried her to bed fast asleep (at 5.50pm!) and this am shes woken up all hot, snotty and rattly so let her have it again as shes not eating and just wants her 'milky'

Gonna give it a few days til she is well and try again but on a different tack this time. Her am bottle is the one she likes to have in bed all snuggled up with bunny so will keep that for a while and concentrate on bedtime bottle first as she drinks that while watching ITNG so its not a sleepy thing. Will try a cup again but let her have nesquik for a few days so its more of a treat then reduce the amount of powder in it til shes having milk. Its now we switched her off formula adding an ounce of cows milk and removing an ounce of formula every few days and it worked really well. Once shes a bit happier with that will think on morning bottles. Dont want her to drop her intake too much really with her being so skinny

She was quite tired when we got home so I thought I'd delay her tea and just give her a drink of milk, anyway I couldn't see a bottle anywhere so grabbed a TT beaker (you know the small ones with handles) and filled it up, and she drank from it NO problem

Hmmmmm, well I will give it a go for her night time milky and see what happens!

We cant win can we as i remember worrying as LIly refused (and still does) to have a bottle at all as she wanted a cup!! To be honest she does not drink as much milk as she used to so maybe it just gets a bit boring after a bit when there are nice smoothie and milkshake alternatives

We took it in steps too (baby ones ) with bedtime bottle - it took long enough to get him to take one at about 10/11 months from BF'ing! So it used to be follow-on milk from a bottle with lights off, sleepy bean, put to bed... then we changed one thing at a time; change to cows milk - lights on - moved to before bath time - had with story time - changed to cup with a straw - changed again to be less milk and some supper of porridge / toast instead (we were getting soaking wet nappies in the morning). For about the past 3 months we've had toast and third a TT cup of milk, using a straw (great hit!) while he sits on our lap and reads books - then it's upstairs for bath & bed.

He can drink from an open cup fine, it's just a bit more messy! He can slurp and read at the same time with the straw though. I'd do the same with her being poorly though, we're the same with a dummy - he only has one in his cot usually but recently he was so poorly and just lying on us etc. so snuggled him up and he wanted one for comfort, not the time to be hard-lining it

I'd highly recommend straws as an alternative / inbetween stage - we just cut down regular bendy straws - although they do mean sitting with and holding rather than handing over the cup/beaker xx

Wil only uses his TT cup (with the handles). The fresh fruit smoothie is a great idea. We have bags of strawberries, blueberries and raspberries in the freezer and just chuck a few in the blender with a banana and milk for a great 'healthy' milkshake. Wil is funny when he hears the blender he gets all excited and does a little dance - think he likes milkshakes
