| why are they different?
I thought everyone in England said mum but lots of you say mam.
i'm not being rude but do you pronounce it incorrectly? or is there a reason why |

| In the North East (says me speaking for the entire region; not even from there or live there!! ) in schools they teach it and spell it as Mam and like Amy mentioned on her other post, they have cards as 'Mam' and 'Mammy' in shops. Only know as I'm Yorkshire born - a hop and an A19 away My mother and the MIL don't "like" being called 'Mum' (too short / harsh sounding - prefer 'mummy' ) but tough bananas - they get either Mother or Mum cards and will damn well like it

| i know the correct spelling is mom or mommy.
because of our accents down south it sounds like mum and that is why we use mum although mom is the correct spelling.
but i cant find anything on mam |

| My mum's side of the family are from Glasgow and I call her mum or mam as she moved down south to marry and set up a new life, if I'm ill I call her mummy. My father is Spanish/English and always has been Daddy (he said it is a respect thing) although my adoptive dad I call him Kev cuz that's his name lol.
My mum is Grandma as she says that's the Scottish way and my hubby's mum is Nanny cuz she's English and says Nanny is an English term and the kids don't get confused if we say we're going to see Grandma or Nanny then they know where we're going. My granddad was always granddad but a friend of mine called hers Gramps xxxxxxxx

| I always thought it was just a dialect/regional thing. I say mum. My mum is Nan and Matt's is Grandma. I don't really like granny or grandma, i think they sound old but matt's mum wanted to be called that. My dad's mum is my Nanna and Imogen calls her that too, i love that name i think it sounds so nice and friendly for some reason I heard that's a northern name? Idk, although none of my friends call their grandparents Nanna |

| In NI basically everyone says Mum, or mummy when they kids. My mum is granny and OHs mum is nana. FILs OH is starting to get nanny but thats an awkward issue.... I like the way they all different and they all picked them themselves. I agree granny sounds old but thats what my side of the family call grandparents and I think it just stuck with my mum. |
