Izzy is just 2 weeks off 18 months and still refuses to walk without our finger tips!

She charges round with her walker, and can stand and lift stools etc so I know she has the strength and balance to do it...just got to convince her she can do it!

Anyone else in the same position? flower

Hi Lisa

My friend had this with her little girl and in the end she asked the doctor if there was anything to worry about. They told her to take away the walker as her little girl was used to using it and therefore made no effort to walk without it! anyway she put the walker away and surprise surprise she was walking within days!

Luckily its that vtech one that the play front comes off so she can still play with it!

My daughter wasn't walking properly until she was nearly 2, the Dr's weren't worried as she was forward in other things. The Dr said babies can only learn one thing at a time so for MJ it was talking/sign language the walking came later. I wouldn't worry huni Very Happy you and your OH could sit opposite each other and one would encourage Izzy to go to the other by clapping and smiling. Sit only cms apart at 1st then gradually move further and further away.

Kids love encouragement and praise.

What is her fav treat? MJ's was grapes or bluberries so hubby and I would have a stash of grapes/blueberries each and her first step to hubby was rewarded with half a grape then her 1st step back to me was rewarded and lots of "YAYYY well done hunny pie" she picked up on that very quickly Very Happy xxxxxxxxx

We are struggling too hon though C is 2 months younger. we tried the against the wall trick and she screamed and slid down and bruised her back, ive tried bribery. We got 2 steps out of her today but she kind of threw herself at me in disgust rather than being into it. Im worried the more i try the more i put her off.

Makes sense the whole learning one thing at a time i guess cos her voacb is coming along frighteningly fast, this week along shes tried iggle piggle (ii-ull ii-ull), hands, blue (boo), balloon (boon) third (turd - watching third and bird)and disaster (daster - watching zingzillas) randomly though only iggle piggle hands and balloon in context but i actually had a short conversation with her the other day regarding what she wanted so i guess shes focussing totally on that

Yeh I suppose it makes sense - I think its the whole 'if they aren't walking by 18 months' thing that makes me think should I do more to encourage her, rather than that I am worried

Seems to me the more i try the more stubborn she gets. She doesnt really bother with her walker but i have taken to letting her push her buggy along and walk as she did 400m pushing it the other day. I am gonna get her a gym ball as will (gill and will) got on well using that

We used bribery, yogurt covered fruit flakes worked for us, me and adam sat feet to feet and passed them between us, we never pushed her further than that, after that she did it her self.

Bribery worked for me too, Chocolate cake done the job, worth a try! As long as bubs is progressing well and shows signs of being able to do it then don't worry, its obviously just nervousness, and that will come, my lo walked holding hands for 2 months, could also stand up on her own from the floor for ages, but did not walk for 2 months it was really annoying so I get where you are coming from cos you assume once they can do that that the walking will follow soon after, if you are bothered just mention it to the HV.

She obviously can do it it it sounds like a confidence thing. She just hasnt gone the last step and let go yet.

I would get her between you and OH sat of the floor not too far apart and let her walk back and forth between you both. Loads of excited encouragement and praise and claps and laughing. Or like some of the other have said use a favourite toy or food. xxxx

Well I took the vtech away and gave her the front console bit -well it was hilarious because she picked it up and tried to walk with it and looked ever so confused!

I think she is getting there. I still have to use 2 fingers, if I remove one she shouts at me and has hissy fit on the floor Laughing

bless her!

as the others have said if she is concentrating on the talking then its one thing at a time.

Alice doesnt talk really, she can say yeah (to everything), dada, ta and a few other bits but only when she chooses to!

well she walked holding her buggy today again and went to elc and she walked round elc with a cheapy £ buggy. This thing was so light she wasnt leaning on it so im temted to buy it even though shes getting a nice one for crimbo as she might then work out its ok to walk if she gets the confidence from having that in front of her. If it doesnt work it was only a fiver

Like Annalisa (Mario) said Wil progressed massively when we gave him a gym/ birthing ball to play with. He started off pushing it like a walker but then started to push it ahead of himself and chase after it.

Bribery is great too on these occasions - keys, mobile phones, food or the TV remote work for Wil.

Wil took his first proper steps at the beginning of June but only in the last 3/4 weeks has he truly started walking in preference to crawling. He still can't get up from the floor without something to pull up against though.

Oliver was never one for just standing there (before he walked) He only did it a hand full of times when he was routing through the bathroom cupboard. And when he did start walking he couldn't get up from sitting to standing without pulling himself up on something. But he did master it within a week or so.

My friends LO is 13mth and still not crawling, but cruises like a good 'un. He walks all over holding one handed, but when he's got his mind/eyes focused on something he walks the full length of the room unaided Shocked But refuses to do it full time.

Kids eh? they do baffle us!
