im getting worried about evan he still wont speak he says mum and thats about it!! i know he has said a couple of other words previous but he seems to have forgot them, he will say ha (which is ta) or sees when he wants something, ive heard him say dad, cosies and juice but he jst wont say it anymore its like he has forgot, before all he wud say was dada constantly and even mum he rarely says it

ive tried everything to get him to copy me with words but he jst wont he says things in baby language and if i ask him to do something or pick something up he knows what i mean and can do it or if i tell him to throw the ball or point to something he can so he can def hear me (my dad and oh were gettin concerned incase he was deaf and thats why he cudnt speak and jst made the noises he does - similar to growling or shouting) but he definitely isnt def and in other ways he is really clever but at 19 months and not showing any signs of wanting to talk or say words im gettin really worried
any advice wud be great

Hayden was a bit like it but in the last 3 months he picks up new words daily. If you're worried speak to your hv next time you go to clinic, although I wouldn't worry too much, I can understand you worrying.
They all develop at different rates and some are quicker at some things than others, I think they actually all level out once they start full time school

Andrew was really slow at talking, it was only a few months before his second birthday he really started talking. He said Mama, Dada, All gone and Uh oh at 6 months and 7 months but nothing until about 20ish months.

The health visitor said they should have 60 words by 2 years old and I thought there is no way he will have that, but once he started talking it was like a button just clicked! He now can talk in little sentances and has caught up with his peers completely!

My friends son on the other hand is the same age as Andrew (older by about 9 days) and still rarely speaks, he has now been referred to a speech therapist.

My step son didnt say a word until after 2 years old, he was taken for all sorts of hearing tests to check if everything was ok. He was like Andrew though and once he started talking that was it. He is now pretty much top of the class and is very intelligent so there was nothing to worry about there!

The fact that he understands what you are saying to him is a brilliant thing! There is help out there if you are worried, speak to your health visitor

Oh I will just add that the thing i found that helped Andrew come along was flash cards! He loved getting them out and looking at the pictures and its not just the word as such that they can learn from them, like if it was a cat I would said look, cat, meow

I really wouldn't worry hun, My LO has only been 'talking' for a couple of months, he started when he was maybe 20/21mths and its amazing how quick they pick it up. My friends little girl is just a few weeks older than Ollie, and her understanding of stuff is brill but shes not big on talking really although she was saying more words than Ollie a few months back but I think its just a case that he likes the sound of his own voice
Do you have a surestart up there? Generally they don't tend to worry until he's 2yr+. The fact that he is saying words inbetween all the mumbles and grunts is a good sign, but once he does start he'll be learning new words every day. xx

Some children take longer than others. If his understanding of what you say is good and you've had his hearing checked, I would try not to worry, carry on encouraging him by talking to him all the time, tell him about what you're doing and point to things and ask him to repeat what they are. Maybe get some flash cards to help him along too. I'm sure he'll do it in his own time though xx

Im glad u posted something like this callums the same he doesnt say anything he says mum n dad but not knowing what he says he randomly just say that. Im gonna ring my hv after xmas to see what she says because im really worried xx

ive bought him flash cards and again if i lay a few out and say car or milk or whatever he will point to it but wont say it!!

ive spoke to the hv and she said he shud be saying so many words by time he is 2 and if he isnt he will be referred to speech therapy but until he is 2 they wont do anything

im worried im maybe puttin pressure on to cos i feel im always trying to get him to say words and he jst laughs and babbles in baby language and i think cos he looks older ppl expect him to be speaking and a few ppl have questioned why he isnt and cos my parents are now gettin worried about it and my oh is worrying bout it, its worrying me even more

like u say wriggler maybe something will jst click and he will all of a sudden say loads of words and ill not be able to keep him quiet lol, i hope so anyway dont like the thought of him having to have tests n therapy

I think alot of boys are like this, my friends was reallly grunty and then all of a sudden at about 2- 2 1/2 he wa saying allsorts like he had been saving it up!

im sure im worrying for no reason and he will speak when he is good and ready but its jst the more ppl comment on it the more i worry and cos he was so quick with his walking and he is really good at copying me if i do something such as cleaning or whatever he can copy me exact that im maybe jst expecting that he will be quick at everything which is never goin to be the case!!

mandy ive not had his hearing actually checked other than his newborn check which was all fine, but im 100% he can hear perfectly cos he responds to me talking to him and knows exactly what im telling him to do, tbh the thought that he was deaf wud never have even entered my mind if it wasnt for my dad and oh speaking about it, but he definitely isnt deaf

Honestly ladies I really wouldn't worry until they are 2yrs old. When it does start it happens so fast. Its like they go to bed one night and are able to resite the collins dictionary the next day

I think if he can follow instructions or he understands what your saying to him then he should be able to hear.

Andrew looks older than he is too and all his friends were talking way before he was.

How old is Evan now?

Funny you should mention 'forgeting words'. Caitlin at 12 mths ish could say 8-10 words eg mama, dada, yes, no, ball, cat,shoe, sock, stuart...

Then I noticed about 2mths ago that all she would say was mama, dada, yes, no & stuck. I worried her speech was going backwards. Now this week she has started saying bowl, baby & dog, aswell as a few of the words I thought she had 'forgot'. She also went through a stage of mama dada ing constantly between 8-10mths and then it felt like months before she made the sound again. Im sure between now and she turns 2 she will become a selective mute again

I really wouldnt worry. They can be wee monkeys that worry us over silly things, im sure one day it will just click with him!

Oh just thought id mention dummys can affect speech development if they used constantly. I am prob guilty of letting Caitlin have hers too much and def notice she isnt as noisey if she has it in!

evans never had a dummy so its not like i can even blame that i guess he is jst being a typical male and being lazy with his speech

My youngest nephew has been going to speech therapy for about a year or so now and is coming on in leaps and bounds. He was slow in talking and was really saying much at the age of three. Little one's all develop at their own pace so I wouldn't be too worried hun. Once evan starts talking you will probably not get a word in edge ways .

Thomas is 16 months and ony says mumma dadda and tea. Oh and caca for milk/drink.
Having 2 boys that were both early talkers, well before 1st birthday I was getting worried why Thomas would not speak. Seems I have no reason to worry tho which is good x

sophia is a bit younger but has said aobut 10 different words, but she seems to learn them by sayig htem all the time, then stores them up and brings out the ones she wants when she needs them. at the mo she mainly syas ta and cu-dool, bu ti know she knows, daddy, muma, baby, 2, 3, bye, and a couple others too.

She has also started throwing books at us and saying 'read it!' or if she wants something, drags us to it and says 'need it!' very cute!

I reckon that once they have elarnt it, they dont need ot say t all the time anymore so they save it up in their minds till they have enough stored up top start speaking more. Thats my take, i guess the proof will be in the pudding which is my daughteras she gets bigger.

Sure he is fine hun. But also its so hard not to worry as a mum, i worry bout loads of stuff with Sophia! Sure she is fine in every way though.

I really wouldn't worry. Aimee has only reallhvstarted talking in the last 2 months and she is 22 months now.

Now she copies everything we say and doesn't shut up talking lol x

The other ladies seem to have covered it Also, a dummy and/or bottle wouldn't necessarily impair speech aquisition, it's more to do with prolonged use and speech development and pronunciation etc. Boys and girls are different too as mentioned - plus very true that all babies (and people?!) do things at their own rate. xx
