My friend P had a baby the beginning of december and apparently she cries alllllll the time. P has been giving her colief and the drs are saying it's not reflux. P says they are going to try her on other milk given by the doctors but what if that doesn't work. Is there anything else it might be? P is starting to get depressed because she feels 'like a bad mum'. I don't know what to suggest to her? Any help please

Lily was like this. Every waking moment was spent crying. It really started to drive us mad.

I changed her milk from sma gold to aptimil and it worked wonders!!! I also give her infacol, but changing the milk is what sorted her out. After 8 weeks of screaming we finally got to eat a meal together x

Did you have any clues that it was the milk or did you just try your luck and changed it?

My friends baby cried LOADS too..he always had wind and although the meds helped she needed to help him physically by laying him on his back and doing the thing with their legs up and down to squeeze the tummy...and as soon as he trumped he was happy!

Dunno if it is that for sure, but wind is pretty nasty if they cant get it out either end.

We had no idea what was doing it. We just got to a point where we thought it couldn't hurt to change brand and we were lucky it worked. X

Still could be reflux too....Jess had silent reflux which means you dont need to witness vomiting or anything, it just rises in their windppe and hurts them!

Jess cried a lot!!!!!

So ideas to try are:

1. New milk
2. Back to Dr for some Gaviscon powder for bottle
3. Let baby sleep on tummy (naughty i know, but it was the only way Jess would relax.....she still sleeps on tum now!)
4. Let babe have a dummy (can help calm colic/reflux a little)
5. Raise the cot head slightly (just a folded towel under the mattress at head end is enough)
6. And the biggy for us is 'white noise'.....we have a white noise sound machine in both kids rooms, we use one called 'marpac'. get your friend to research them, they have been a lifesaver for us.

xxx

Its kinda hard to describe lol, but I'll try!

Lay on back and lift legs up then kinda roll both legs at the same time down and towards his tummy, so his thighs sqish his tummy a bit, its sounds odd, but it somehow frees up the wind and it comes out

Milk allergy/intolerance is always the first thing that springs to mind, just from Caitlin being so bad before it was discovered. (Its probably the least likely cause but worth considering)

I posted about it in ask a BANDA mum http://www.babiesandall.com/t953-baby-illness-problems
Caitlins was obviously severely allergic, but other babys can have intolerances that dont cause such extreme reactions... crying constantly, gastric pain, constipated/runny nappys, unexplained rashes (Caitlin used to go red behind her ears). Changing her milk to hypo-allergenic was the best thing I ever did.

Regardless of the cause I really feel for your friend. Its terrible having a baby that cries all the time. Aswell as feeling sorry that theyre in pain you really do feel sorry for yourself to, I nearly questioned whether I had pnd it got me so down & felt that I wasnt enjoying my baby/as good a mum as everyone else who had happy settled babys. Really hope she gets some answers. x
