First topic message reminder :

sooooo i have a good friend who is half Faroese and half Danish, she is dead against the use of reins and has never used them on her toddler - she says that in her culture(s) it is more expected that your child learns to respect you and learns to stay away from danger and that reins are actually counter-productive and in some way cruel because they restrain the child...

what do you think? it made me think about wether i would use them or not with elijah (i had never really thought about it) and i would like to think it was realistic not to use them...opinions please Very Happy

I have to have the reins for Flick as she won't hold hands for long, I tried the holding onto her hood trick but she caught me and told me off Laughing Laughing
She had a little ladybird backpack reins but they have disappeared so invested in the Bunny ones Very Happy
£12.50 is a lot for reins but I told OH after he had had a drink or 2 and he didn't mind Wink reins? - Page 2 633833

There is no question about it for me - she is too young to understand danger for herself but perfectly capable of putting herself in front of the danger - so why would I risk letting that happen? I use them whenever we are out and there is a road etc or when we are in a big shop and I don't want to be telling her to come back all the time, when she is on the reins she respects them and walks along side me.

I don't believe it has anything to do with respect of the parent - toddlers are not capable of knowing what danger is, so no amount of respect is going to get around that.

Actually her statement really pisses me off - what right does anyone have to call others cruel for doing something to protect their child from danger?! Next thing will be that its cruel to strap them in the car seat facing the back cos they cant see thier mummy and thats just plain nasty Rolling Eyes

eek! i think she was just trying to express the cultural view, maybe her vocabulary is a bit harsh at times. i just thought it was interesting though, that it's almost unheard of in some cultures that are so geographically close Smile

what I meant was her saying 'cruel because they restrain the child...' is just stupid because there are all sorts of things that restrain babies and toddlers to keep them safe at certain times, highchairs, bouncy chairs, car seats, bike seats, pretty much everything! but it doesn't make them cruel and I wonder if in their culture they don't use any of those safety measures, cos if they do she kinda hasn't thought about what she said very well?

Nope don't use them.

Tried them but he's a nightmare in there thinking it's hilarious that if he throws himself forwards he can fly. So we don't use them.

How ever he's been with out a buggy walking whilst holding mine or OH's hand or both.

We still take the buggy (in case he gets tired) but if he refuses to hold our hand he's told he'll go into the buggy if he will not hold our hand. And he holds our hand.

We've only ever had to put him in the buggy twice in the last 6 months with him refusing to hold our hand
