| A dental nurse came to our baby group once to talk about this kind of thing. She said you shouldn't use kids toothpaste, it's just a marketing ploy - you should use ordinary family toothpaste (not adult stuff like sensodyne) like colgate or aquafresh
She also said you should spit but not rinse and don't wet your toothbrush first because these things reduce the effect of the fluoride. And your kids don't have the coordination to do their own teeth till they are 7, you should do it for them at least for the bedtime brush until this age.
There was a lot of stuff about bottles and fruit juice too but I bet you know all that already x |

X We were told by our family dentist NEVER to use adult toothpaste on children under 5 he said the ammount of flouride is too damaging for babies and very young children if swallowed, and you can't garuntee a child under 5 won't swallow it! It can affect their thyroid function and also some neuro functions, as well as causing problems with their teeth and if you live in an area with fluoride in the water then basically they are getting a massive dose of it any way. I think it may be a geographical thing, as not all areas have fluorided water. I'm not risking it, and doing as we were advised at the dentist using age specific toothpaste. I would sugest you check with your dentist and find out if you have flurided water xx |

| Oooooooh Jolene you got me worried now cos I'm in Sheffield as well, but I thought we didn't have as much flouride in our water as they do further north east. It was a woman from Sheffield PCT who came to see us and the HV confirmed it more recently but I think I might have to ask my dentist as well now! In other brushing news, Imogen has FINALLY realised I'm not trying to kill her with the toothbrush and will actually open her mouth for me now! (well ok it's only so she can bite the brush but it sure beats screaming the house down) |

| I was also told not to use adult toothpaste due to the fluoride - if you look at the tube adult stuff is something like 1400/1500ppm but kids is 1000. I use a kids minty one and supervise c's brushing.Luckily shes obsessed with it and does it min twice a day (the other day was 5 times )-though that probably means she gets as much fluoride as doig it with adult stuff lol |
