This may sound like a really stupid question but how do you know when your baby starts talking? I wasn't expecting Jamie to say anything for ages but we've noticed whenever he wants me he says mum-mum. He only says this if his upset or wants me and if anyone else tries to get him he bats them away. He never says it any other time (although he'll babble ma-ma-ma da-da-da, etc). Does this make it his first word or is it just like everything else he says. I'm in no hurry for him to speak but just wondered. His certainly starting to understand things because if you ask where da-da is he'll look for Daddy and he babbles it when talking to him but also the rest of the time as well

I think in the last three months noah has been developing so much with his language, he can say a three worded sentence now. He said e r doggy the other day lol. So you can tell when he starts talking properly.

As for the mommy and daddy i would say that jamie is saying those words and understands them. I do think they understand a lot more at that age tho and they are just starting to understand commands etc.

Well done jamie

When I did an English Language course we learnt that Ma/Mum and Da/Dad are the easiest things for a baby to say as don't involve much movement from your tongue. So children tend to babble these quite often. If Jamie is associating Ma/Mum with you then i think he's doing well, as thats not just babbling that understanding the meaning.

Imogen said a few words - Mum, Dad, Duck, Hi, Bye for around 10m onwards but generally her speech has been fairly slow. She wasn't that confident and only in the last 5months has really started to talk properly, although its still a bit baby talk

Oh that reminds me I did language acquisition as part of my English language A level. Will have to dig the stuff out. Am not expecting him to talk properly for months yet, especially as he was moving around quite early.
