- EmVar - sometimes you can apply to schools in the neighbouring LEA but you have to apply through the LEA in which you live. A friend of a friend who is moving hadn't found out if they'd got in in Herts as Beds hadn't yet given out the allocations although Herts had, eventually her local counciller told her just to ring the school direct as they'd have a list of who had got in.
You need to check what the rules are, probably by ringing the council(s) if it isn't clear on the websites. Around here it goes on distance and some schools you generally have to be very close to to have a chance of getting in. (By close I mean as close as 300m in some cases this year, depending on the number of applications and particularly siblings, as in Herts siblings get priority.) Don't believe what estate / letting agents may tell you, check it yourself. (Herts publish the spreadsheets of how many people got into which school due to siblings, distance etc and how far away the furthest people were.) The other catch though is that the rules can change, Herts just went from distance measured along approved path to distance as the crow flies, which if you live near a train line / river for example can make a big difference. eeurrghhh I hope its not done on distance here, the one that is closest is literally 2 minute walk...its not the best - as its near the 'skanky' part of town (sorry to be rude lol) and the ofsted report aint good! |

they dont do it by distance here, just first come first served, i take braden to one which is about 15 min drive away when i've got 3 closer ones and one just literally round the corner.... all pre-schools here you have to ring them and arrange it with them, i applied when braden was 1.5 and he got in when he was two. It costs me £7.50 for a 3 hour session, well it did, when he goes back in sept he gets the 15 hours, but then dita is down to start in jan! x

It is primaries and nurseries that go on distance (and other rules such as siblings) as you apply through the council, pre-schools are first come first served as you apply direct.

Round here (Hertfordshire) a place at the nursery attached to a school gives you no advantage whatsoever in applying to the school. You need to check with your local council for their rules. Here you can rank 3 choices of primary school so whilst it does go on distance you don't automatically get your nearest, but in a high birth rate year the reality is that there isn't really much choice, lots of people didn't get any of their 3 choices for this sept.

yeah i was told that braden wouldnt have a better chance of going to the school i want him to even though he has gone to both their pre-school and will be going to their nursery in january that is attached to the school, but i was informed the likelyhood of getting him in the school is slim x
