PostSubject: Being a school governor!   Being a school governor! EmptyMon Oct 11, 2010 6:07 am

Didn't realise there was soooo much reading to do! Not to mention the training courses!!! Although I am looking forward to it! It will be nice to use my brain again and also get out and meet people!! Although I am slightly worried the Headteacher thinks I am a bit stupid as at the last meeting (my first meeting) she did mention to me that once the bump is born that it wouldn't be appropriate to bring him to the meetings in his pram!!!! I know I am blonde but I am really not that silly!!!

Is anyone else a governor or anything like that??

What is a school governor? Is it in a boarding school? Or is it like being a member of the PTA?

Sorry if I sound dim!

The easiest way to explain is to add a link! Plus I am being a lazy mare!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_governor

A short version is this! In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, school governors are members of a school's Governing Body. In state schools they have responsibility for raising school standards through their three key roles of setting strategic direction, ensuring accountability and monitoring & evaluating school performance. They are the largest volunteer force in the country.

I went into it as I wanted to be more involved in the boys education and school as I have one who is classed as SEN (Special Educational Needs) and one who is G&T (Gifted & Talented)! As I am self employed and will go back to being so once bump is here, I decided I should do something to make myself useful rather than let my brain go to mush! It also gives me the chance to give something back to the school as they have been so good with my boys!

Part of my job involves training governors of further education colleges etc and keeping them up to date. If there is anything i can help with then let me know!

That Headteacher had a cheek saying that to you!!!

Thank you Kate that's brilliant! I will certainly be picking your brain at some point!! I have just registered for all the governor e-learning things I have been told about! I have also registered for a conference in November and hope to get a place on one of the governor induction courses depending on when bump arrives!!

She is a funny thing the head! She seems alright 99% of the time, but then comes out with things like that! She knows that I have been self employed as a book-keeper for the last 6 years, that I have been a treasurer of a playing field committee before and retrained as a book-keeper whilst I was pregnant with Aron! So not the dim blonde I can come across as! Let alone someone who would bring a baby to a governors meeting!

That would be brilliant, thanks hun. It will prob be a year or two before he applies, but I know its something he really wants to get involved in.

Honestly though, if you knew him and I told you he wanted to do it, you would pee your pants.... he is not the school governor type!

Its really good he wants to get involved! It might be worth (if you have already chosen a school) to get in contact now as being a governor is a 4 year term on average and he might be waiting a while once Aimee starts!

My mum was surprised that I had volunteered to do it as you wouldn't expect me to be a governor either but it takes all sorts!
