Work advice please _
PostSubject: Work advice please   Work advice please EmptyThu Dec 09, 2010 2:39 am

I'm currently working on a temporary contract covering someones Maternity leave which is due to finish in February, the lady I'm covering is pregnant again and due in March so they've offered to extend my contract if she goes on mat leave again or make me permanent if she decides to resign.

Previous to finding this out I've been looking around to see what other jobs are around and one has come up which I like the sound of,

I love my job, but I struggle with not seeing Chloe, I work 4 mornings a week, and am supposed to work 20, so should finish by 1pm but I usually don't get home until 2 then spend an hour to 2 hours doing admin at home. When I address it with my manager, I kind of just get the response that I need to manage my time better, but it's not that, I spend so much time travelling, I always work more than my hours, which I don't get paid for.

This new job is 14 hours a week, spread over 2 full days, and the same money as I'm on now, so I'd get 5 days at home, then work Thursday's and Fridays, but it's a more stressful job.

I'm in a dilemma, do I trade in a job I absolutely love but impacts on my home life so much, or go for one that would give me more time with Chloe

Hmmmmm very difficult.

Im not sure you are in a win situation, but I think if it were me, I would probably go for the new job over 2 days a week. Then you can switch off.

Plus, the current job may not even be permenant x

its a hard situation, i can see the dilemma, at the end of the day you know what will make you happy and what is the best decission for your situation, but if it was me i would opt for the job where i get to spend more time at home with DD and not spend so much time doing unpaid work for a boss who sounds like they dont appreciate everything you do!
hope you sort things out and good luck if you go for the new job!
i hope what i said makes sense.....ive got a really bad ear infection and cant think properly!! lol!

Thanks, in my head I know it makes sense, the new position is going back to Financial Services so it's what I'm qualified in, and I know I would be happier being able to do more with Chloe, I feel I miss so much with her now as she sleeps in the afternoons so I hardly see her. So why do I feel so apprehensive? It should be an easy decision to make, but I feel really quite sad at the thought of leaving

^ because it's true that it's better the devil you know!
You may regret not trying it, always wondering 'what if' but at least if you do and it doesn't work out you know that you gave it a go. The new job sounds the best option to me too, that or getting clearer terms / different hours at your current job xx

No question about it - I'd do the job that means more time with Chloe

TBH right now I don't care what job I do so long as I get some money and spend as much time as possible with Izzy - so if you can earn the same then surely there is no question?

is there anything else you can do with your current work? Come up with some diferent hours or agree to new terms...? at least find out for sure if this other lady is going to resign or just have more maternity leave, that might make your decision for you.

It's all well and good going for the option that means you have the most time with Chloe but are you going to hate the 2 days you are at work?

I would go for the new job. Sometimes a change is as good as a rest as they say. I have recently changed jobs and am much happier where I am now. I think you will be happier too hun knowing you have more time to spend with chloe. Good luck whatever you decide
