Friday 15th May i was in babies r us waitin on carry cot for my pram and felt very odd down below and wet (was 2 days overdue) and thought oh shit my waters r goin so rushed home but turns out it was only my mucus plug by late afternoon friday i thought my waters were leaking but when i went to hosp friday night midwife said it was still my mucus plug not my waters (it was actually my hind waters)
at about 3am sat morning i started gettin pains which were coming ever 3 minutes then changed to every 6 mins and back down to 2 n half but pains were always lasting 50secs so i figured this was my contractions starting by time i woke oh up at 6.30 they were every 3mins apart and lasting a minute i did my best to stay home but by 10.30 i was in agony so we got ready went down to midwife unit at hosp, midwife did a check and i was 3cm dilated and the only pain relief she wud give me was paracetomal which didnt help at all!! she then gave me the option of stayin where i was, going for a walk round hosp or goin home for some rest as id been up all night and hadnt ate or drank cos the pain was making me feel sick!! so we decided to come home, i tried to sleep but the contractions were way to too strong i managed to stay home til 3pm wen i had to go back
i was no sooner back in the midwife unit and my waters broke so i got put on gas and air and got all set to go in the birthing pool the gas and air at this point was fab, i was exhausted with havin been up all night but the brithing pool helped my back pain didnt do much for the contractions tho, (i had wrote in my notes no epidural, thats why i was at midwife unit and not labour suite) by about 6.30 i asked for an inj of diamorphine which meant coming out the pool but i actually felt alot better standing and i was able to cope with the contractions more if i stood up and i must say the midwife was fab and she did expect me to have baby by time she finished at 10pm, she gave me an examination about 7 when i was 7 cm dilated. by the time 10pm came i was totally shattered and really wanted to give up although i was still standing and only jst able to smile lol, at 11pm i got another exam and some more diamorphine midwife (new one) said i still wasnt quite dilated yet but they were gettin concerned as my legs kept goin purple with standing so long so i had to lie down, i really felt like i wanted to push but she said to hold off so i did (turns out i was only 8 n half cm dilated) by about 12.30 i said i really felt the need to push again so she said fair enough push ifmy body was telling me to i was still pushing at 2am and nothing happening so she did another check over and i was pretty much fully dilated other than this tiny wee bit of cervix still there then my contractions seemed to stop as soon as i was fully dilated so i had to do it all myself
there were 4 ppl in givin birth and only 2 midwives due to a shortage so she kept disappearing which my mum was none to impressed about,
by 5am she said she was able to see head as i was pushing and we were def getting somewhere i certainly didnt believe her cos nothing felt different and i was jst pushing wen i cud due to havin next to no contractions i hadnt ate all day hadnt peed since 4pm, so eventually she said i need to try make u pee cos she reckoned my bladder was full and this was what was stoppin things so at 7am i managed to stand and walk my way to the bathroom bit of the room i couldnt pee at all, but i felt a major urge to push wen i was standing up and whilst on the toilet i felt baby coming out, so i was stood in bathroom hanging round ohs neck with baby slowly but surely coming out, as the baby's head started to come out it was clear midwife was a lil strange and she shouted for my mum to come thru to help (what i didnt know til today was midwife at that point told my mum baby wasnt breathing and had to get out) a few more pushes later baby came out cord wrapped round his whole body and unfortunately he had poo'd whlst i was pushing and had swallowed alot of it along with mucus and blood and things which had all went into his lungs midwife asked for the help cord to be pulled and wen my oh pulled it she said no the other which my mum knew was the emergency cord as she works in the hospital next thing about 7 other midwives/health professionals appeared thru all doors baby was hanging from me (i knew sumit was wrong cos baby wasnt crying and i kept askin why is he not crying but no one wud answer) they cut the cord and whisked him out of toilet onto a resussitation table (again didnt know it was a rescuss table but my mum did) i knew sumit was wrong and wen i looked at my mum she was crying but a few mins later we heard a wee moan come from him and they had managed to clear his lungs and get him breathing which was a relief i couldnt hold him as i was shaking my whole body had given up and went into keratosis (if thats what u call it) but oh and my mum got a hold although he still wasnt 100% a neo natal doc came in to look at him and said his lungs still sounded like they had a tiny bit fluid on them but he was now doing good,
midwife came back to me to remove placenta but although it was low it wudnt budge they tried everything even catheterisation and nope nothing would budge it so they then said id have to be moved to labour suite to have an epidural and took into surgery to get placenta removed ( i was gutted cos i had went all that time struggled thru labour and didnt think twice bout asking for epidural and now i had no choice) so finally get baby weighed they didnt have time to do anything else due to all the panick that had took place and now with what was goin on with me i got whisked up to labour suite. midwife up there said they wud put a drip in me first as i had done so well it seemed a shame to now have to have epidural (although she couldnt not believe that i had went all that time without bein sent up to labour suite for some extra help) the drip started my contractions again so back on the gas and air lol and a consultant came to see me to see what she could do she knew placenta was sat there right at bottom but jst wudnt budge but i was desp not to have epidural so she said she wud try one last thing and if it didnt work id have no choice but it wud hurt so i had best get suckin on the gas lol, she put her hand up and wow it did hurt (u wud think after pushing out a baby it wudnt but omg it did) but it done the job and she got placenta out without me having to go to theatre and finally it was all over
Evan was and still is gorgeous! but even a year and a half later im still saying after that birth im not having any more! its right enough u do forget the pain of the contractions or i certainly have but ill never forget the exhaustion of a 36 hr labour or having to see evan jst hangin from me lifeless!
although if i had to go thru that again to have evan i wud every day of the week!!
