House or flat? _
PostSubject: House or flat?   House or flat? EmptyThu Mar 03, 2011 4:31 pm

Simple q! Laughing

looking at places to live for when we come back to england - could be in 6 weeks! Shocked Wave2

I would love to rent a little 2 bedroom house, not fussed if it's big or not, as Japanese flats are tiny and anything will feel big! However, flats tend to be better equipped (most have oven+fridge freezer+dishwasher etc whereas houses tend to just have oven) and still be a little cheaper.

Downsides to a flat though - might not feel so safe with bedrooms on the ground floor. Not sure I could do first floor flat with 2 babies, shopping and pushchair.. also, no garden scratch

What would you choose?

Personally I would choose a house. Mainly as it would be lovely for milo to have a little garden to play in. If you are able to choose then go for a house. You can get quite a few equipped with White goods, but if not you should pick some up on eBay cheap x

Defo a house for me. Especially in spring and summer as you even decide to buy a little slide for milo.

Defo a house! What if you got really loud neighbours in the flat above you?
Having a garden will be lovely in the summer too Smile (and you can hang washing out Wink )

I would definitely prefer a house, but when a flat is 50 pounds a month cheaper I start thinking, hmm.. maybe that would be a better option! We'll be living about 15 mins away from my mum, and she'll have a garden..

Good point about the noisy neighbours - although I think with Milo plus a baby we'll be the noisy ones wherever we live! Laughing Ideally I'd love to find a cheapish spacious house with a garden, just hope we can afford it!

i've done a flat and house, had a flat when rich was first born till he was 4 and houses since.

i'd go for house, you have some of your own space, the neighbours tend to be less noisy, well in my experience they do and with one baby it was hard in a flat and i was on ground floor, you could hear everyone coming and going and it always woke him up.

i'd say house, we got ours part furnished and got everything in the kitchen we needed.

good luck with the house/flat hunting x

PostSubject: Re: House or flat?   House or flat? EmptyThu Mar 03, 2011 8:19 pm

I currently live in a flat and i'm desperate to move into a house!

As the ladies above said the noise is the worst thing. The neighbours in the flat above me sound like elephants, it was fine when Alfie was a baby as he slept through anything then they moved out when he was about 3 months old. Some cleaners came around to clean it the other day and it sounded like elephants were stomping round & woke Alfie up.. I'm dreading people moving in! Plus as we're on ground floor his bedroom is right next to the front door & mail boxes - it's awful & always sounds like there's someone in our flat Sad

I really really really want a garden - even just a little one. I found that in a flat you feel really isolated and caged in.

If you're wanting a house that doesn't have the goods you want then freecycle is great for getting all the stuff you need untill you can afford to get new ones! Smile

we are in a ground floor flat which has its own front and back garden and only 1 upstairs neighbour so its a good compromise (sadly for us my mother lives here too hahahaha Wink)

Im a bit snobby and wouldn't ever choose to live in a flat..I suppose I grew up on a farm in the middle of nowhere so the thought of neighbours on the otherside of walls makes me cringe...we did it for 6 months in the bungalow and I could wait to get away!

So I'd pick house everytime, even if its got a neighbour on one side its not like having them up down and both sides!

Hmm, the flats we've seen online have mostly been 4 flats in one building, so not surrounded by any means - I couldn't cope with people on every side! One of the nice ones we saw was ground floor, so obvs neighbours above, but there was a communal entrance hall between the 2 ground floor flats so you wouldn't really hear much.

^that one looks a bit small, but that kind of building is pretty popular around there.

Lisa&Alfie, that sounds exactly like our flat at the moment! The mailboxes are on the other side of our lounge wall, and the kids next door love slamming them again and again and again and again Evil or Very Mad , not to mention playing football in the passageway in front of the lounge and bedroom windows!

that's kind of how ours is set up - one big house split into 4, it's fine if your neighbours are nice Smile check out the gardens and bin area that will give you a good idea of wether you would live near horrors or not Laughing
we have a seperate front door at the back though (umm did that make sense?) haha Very Happy

Haha, Kelly, Susan, great minds! That house was on my dream list already!! It looks lovely doesn't it! It won't be available anymore by the time we get back, Sad but it's sickeningly perfect - right location, almost the right price, right size and it's gorgeous! I keep showing to my oh going, "Look at the bathroom sink!! Looook!" He doesn't get it Rolling Eyes Very Happy

The only thing I could pick holes in, is that there's no kitchen window - but that would be being reeeaaally picky, and with that bathroom sink, I could forgive a lack of kitchen window! Laughing

I think I'm also mildly obsessed with all the furniture - which would probably go!

I lived in a flat for a while and for 2 of us it was okay but we outgrew the space.

I couldn't imagine living in a flat with small children.

BTW you will only be about 1/2 hour drive from me when you get to Ely Very Happy
